Before World War II, there was a man, who struggled to make a living. At a young age, he was sent to serve as an apprentice for a carpenter. As he tended to his master and scrubbed his master’s floors, he slowly gained knowledge on the trade. After World War II ended, he moved to Hong Kong, a British Colony at the time, in order to avoid the China Civil War. As the Shanghainese were well known for their excellent craftmanship in the construction industry, the Shanghai tilers, bricklayers, masons, carpenters were enlisted by the British to migrate to North Borneo and rebuild their war torn colony. This man traveled to a small Town called Keningau and started his own Carpentry Workshop. This man was our founder’s father.
Our founder, born and bred in a humble stilt house made of wood, grew up playing in his father’s carpenter workshop with his handmade toys fashioned out of wood. With his father’s support in education, our founder proudly graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Taiwan and gained his Masters Degree from University of AA England through scholarship. Upon returning from England, he worked under his father’s guidance in the construction industry completing notable projects such as the Keningau Mosque.
Unable to forget his carpentry roots, our founder decided to start a solid timber processing factory in Keningau. Rimaju itself was established in 1989 as a construction based company and in 1991, Rimaju completed the Keningau Timber Factory and started producing solid wood flooring (mosaic parquet, lam parquet, UV Prefisnished T&G, etc.) for international markets as well as domestic markets. Rimaju exported top quality timber floor to countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan, Australia, Europe and USA. At the time, the tiny Kota Kinabalu office was based in Damai Plaza. Realizing the shift in the flooring industry, Rimaju partnered up with Inovar Floor (the first laminate floor producer in Malaysia) in 1996 and we became their main distributer in Sabah.
